Anyone who has been involved in the design and operation of our electric grid for a few decades could have written the article linked below. Perhaps I should be ashamed for not making the grid's vulnerability more clear. Maybe all of us who have learned about this matter have not talked about it enough, just because it is just too frightening. But regardless, the author of the article linked below dares to speak our fears out loud, and you should take a few minutes to read and hear it.
Instead of writing about the problem, my team at Glasgow EPB spent years developing an antidote for the terrible possibilities described in this article. We built infrastructure capable of reshaping electric power demand such that dramatically reduced electric power capacity could be dealt with such that life could go on. Nearly all of the suggested responses to this vulnerability were envisioned, installed, and tested in Glasgow, Kentucky. While our efforts were only scaled to demonstrate that peak demand-based retail electric rates, combined with batteries and other technologies, could reshape peak demand and allow the existing grid to survive staggering capacity losses, our research and development proved much of the speculation included in this article. Alas, it also proved that humans respond poorly to being asked to make minor life-style changes to prevent the apocalyptic changes we are facing as described in this article.
